JAEN Information: AT SOURCE OF THE GUADALQUIVIR

Jaen Nature Park Routes - Part 4

The Nature Park of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, represents almost a fifth of the entire provincial territory. Spread amongst 24 municipalities, the nature park possesses 214,000 hectares and was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1983. Within the park one can access the roads which lead to Cazorla, Villanueva del Arzobispo and La Puerta de Segura.

The locality of Cazorla spreads out beneath the Castillo de la Yedra (Yedra Castle). The ruins of Santa Marra rise up from the heart of the old quarter and a group of winding roads ascend to the plaza de la Corredora. La lruela is located at only three kilometres from Cazorla. Its Templar castle represents the entrance to the nature park. In Quesada sits the Rafael Zabaleta Museum, which assembles the work of one of Jaen's most charismatic painters.

The journey continues along extremely winding roads which crown the pass oflas Palomas. From here can be glimpsed a spectacular view of the upper valley of the River Guadalquivir. The road forks several kilometres below. On one side can be found the roadway that leads to a river source. On the other, the road to the visitors centre at Vinegar Tower (La Torre del Vinagre). In both cases the landscape is exceptional. The largest river of Andalusia is born in the midst of a steep natural beauty spot, where Mountain goat, Fallow deer and Red deer roam.

The visitors' centre at Vinegar Tower teaches the importance of this protected space via its botanical and hunt rooms. The Reservoir of Tranco is an interior sea within the province. Its waters regulate a large section of the high river bed of the Guadalquivir. The head of the reservoir is located in the sierra of Las Villas, close to the municipalities of Villacarrillo and Iznatoraf. Villacarrillo displays a magnificent historical heritage, compounded by the Renaissance church of Nuestra Senora de Asuncion. Following the waterway from the reservoir, one can espy Homos de Segura whose sierra is endowed with tremendous ecological importance.

In its villages and hamlets, signs of the olive oil and cattle breeding industries can be perceived, and they also offer a vast cultural and ethnographical heritage. A large part of the region can be seen from the castle of Segura de la Sierra. Santiago de la Espada is one of most concealed municipalities in the whole province. The River Segura is born within its boundaries. The waters of the River Guadalimar flow throughout this region and divide the locality of La Puerta de Segura. Sites and Tones de Albanchez both possess the character of border towns as they are only a stone's throwaway from the province of Albacete.
