JAEN Information: SIERRA
OF ANDUJAR |
Nature Park Routes - Part 3
The Roman bridge of Andujar is the most illustrious entrance to the
City. Exactly halfway between Madrid and Seville, reclining in one
of the banks of the Guadalquivir, Andujar boasts a remarkable monumental
heritage. This is best exemplified by the plaza of Santa Maria, where
there is a church of the same name and the Mudejar tower of the Clock.
The church of San Miguel and the Town Hall, which is built upon an
early comedy house, are both located in the plaza of Santa Maria.
The road leading to the nature park commences here in Andujar.
This privileged corner of the Sierra Morena consisting of 60,800 hectares
is carpeted with dense Holm oak forests, Gall oaks and cork trees.
Passing the colony of Las Viñas, the road descends to the banks
of the river Jandula. The natural wonder Lugar Nuevo lies on one side
of the roadway which rises to the hill of the Cabezo. The sanctuary
of La Virgen de Cabeza is built upon this hill and is one of the most
important temples dedicated to the Virgin Maria in the whole of Spain.
The cattle raising character of the Nature Park of the Sierra of Andujar
is present in the township of Baños de le Encina. Taking the
road which leads from Selladores to Contadero and El Centenillo one
finds a series of cattle ranches which raise fighting bulls.
Baños de la Encina is a village anchored to the Mediaeval era.
Its caliphal castle, constructed in the middle of the 10th Century,
dominates the hill. The church of San Mateo lies at its feet. The
hermitage of Cristo del Llano, located upon a hill boasts one of the
best examples of Baroque side chapels in the whole of Andalusia
