JAEN Information: JAEN ROUTE OF THE NAZARIES

The Route of the Nazaries

Jaen Arabic past is present in most of its villages, towns and landscapes. The long seven years of Muslim dominion determined the history, culture, society and art of this province. Jaen, - the former Geen which means "place where caravans pass through" - belonged to that Al-Andalus whose stellar poles were the cities of Cordoba and Granada. The recovery, revision and presentation of this ancient splendour is the task of the Andalusi Legacy, a cultural and tourism initiative which attempts to put into relief the great importance of those times in order to understand our current epoch. The Andalusi Legacy has outlined two routes in the province of Jaen. The most important is the Route of the Nazarites which wanders through most of the provincial territory. The itinerary begins in las Navas de Tolosa, which nowadays is a district of La Carolina. It was also the battle site where the Almohads lost their northern possessions in 1212. Passing by Baños and its castle, followed by Bailen and Mengibar, one arrives at Jaen.

The Arab Baths, which are one of the best preserved buildings of their kind, are located in the Moorish quarter of la Magdalena. The fortress of Santa Catalina proudly crowns the city, and is one of the main bastions of that civilization in the lands of Jaen. The Route of the Nazaries continues to Baeza and Ubeda, towns which eight hundred years ago erected Aljama mosques. In fact, Ubeda conserves an original Mudejar house whose horseshoe shaped arches reveal its origins. Towers and watchtowers built for defence are dispersed throughout villages such as Castellar, Sorihuela del Guadalimar, Beas and Segura de la Sierra. Sierra Magina was for many years frontier territory with the Nazarite kingdom of Granada and the land reconquered by the Castilian Kings. Localities such as Cambil, Huelm Mata Begid dis mental catalogue Arabian spirit. The Route of continues through to Granada, until capital, where it te feet of the Alhambra.
