Farming land
The regions which extend southwest of Jaen are lands used for the
cultivation of olive trees. In the centre, between gentle hills, is
Martos, the main olive oil production zone. The hamlet of Martos reposes
at the feet of la Pefia (the Rock). The monumental catalogue of Martos
is completed by the hospital and the church of San Juan de Dios, the
convent of the Trinidad, the chapter and the Fuente Nueva (new fountain).
Torredonjimeno possesses a beautiful square where the Town Hall stands.
The church of San Pedro is situated in the old quarter of the village.
Torredelcampo lies in the shade of the hill named Megatin.
On one of its sides the hermitage of Santa Ana is located. The Green
Trail of Olive Oil flows through these localities. Vast fields of
olive groves lead to Porcuna. This ancient Roman town named Obulco
was remarkably well developed during the Arab era. The Tower of Boabdil,
which is an octagonal watchtower, dates from this time and is currently
housed in the archaeological museum.
Other buildings are the church of la Asuncion and the House of Stone.
Lopera possesses a square which overflows with history. There, one
can find the Arab castle, the 17th Century Town Hall and the church
of la Asuncion, which evokes the Baroque style. Close to Lopera lie
the municipalities of Arjona and Arjonilla. In the first of these,
one can admire the church of Santa Maria, in the second, the Arab
castle and the temple of the Encarnacion. |
