JAEN Information: JAEN POPULAR FIESTAS

Time for festivals and pilgrimages

Cities such as Jaen, Linares and Andujar celebrate with special intensity the Cavalcade of the Three Kings which takes place during the afternoon of the SthJanuary. But Holy Week is the event that sparks the interest of locals and foreigners alike. In Ubeda and Baeza the processions file past in sober Castilian style. Baeza, moreover, chants Eslava's miserere, a musical piece that recalls the Passion and Death of Christ. The Semana Mayor (Grand Week) of Ubeda, Baeza and Jaen are declared to be of national tourism interest. In fact, in the early hours of Good Friday, the figure of Our Father Jesus, popularly known as the grandfather, is carried through the streets of Jaen. The last Sunday in April, on the hill of the Cabezo de Andujar, the pilgrimage of La Morenita commences. La Virgen de la Cabeza is the oldest pilgrimage in Spain and around half a million pilgrims from all over the country, get together during this weekend. In Beas de Segura, the fiestas of the toro ensogado (a bull with a rope around its neck runs freely through the streets followed by the young men of the locality), are also celebrated around this time. One has to wait until June for the celebrations in honour of the Virgen de la Capilla in Jaen.

But October is the month in which the feria of San Lucas takes place, with an importantlist of credits which closes the bullfighting season in Spain. The 5th July is the date when La Carolina recalls the founding of the town in its fiestas, with a high cultural content. During the summer months the localities of Circheles, Campillo de Arenas and Belmez de la Moraleda celebrate the festival of the Moors and Christians. Martos, Andujar and Alcala la Real celebrate their most important fiestas in the summer. At the end of August Linares is clothed in its finest colours to render homage to San Agustin, patron saint of the town. A few days later, the fair moves to Ubeda where San Miguel is remembered. In the small locality of Huesa, on the last day of the year, the 31st December, the celebration of the fiesta of San Silvestre takes place, which is imbued with singular local character.
