JAEN Information: JAEN GREEN OLIVE OIL TRAIL

The road of health

The Green Olive Oil Trail is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the Route of the Campiña (fertile areas of cultivated land). This green corridor which is 55 kilometres long, follows the itinerary which had been previously used by the railway line that connected Jaen with the Cordovan station of Campo Real. The railway line was constructed between 1882 and 1893. During a large part of the 20th Century this line was used for the transportation of mineals and the conveyance of olive oil, which was the origin of the name "the oil train". It was abandoned in 1971 due to commercial reasons, and was definitively closed to passengers on 1st January, 1985. At the end of the nineties, the Provincial Delegation of Jaen recovered this historical route for tourism. Thus, plans were made for the Green Olive Oil Trail, an ideal itinerary for mountain trekking, cycle tourism and other sports which are closely linked to Nature.

Course of the Route
In the direction of Torredelcampo, the trail penetrates a landscape dotted with orderly olive groves and solitary hills. Various detours lead to a well signed archaeological route of los Torreones (turrets), where one can admire ancient watchtowers dating from the Arabic era. The rest area of Quebradas lies halfway between Torredelcampo and Torredonjimeno. From the station of Torredonjimeno (km. 15.6) the trail moves further inland towards Martos; part of its route crosses the urban centre. After passing this town, the railway line moves in a southwest direction. The landscape becomes more rugged and mountainous due to the proximity of the Southern Sierra. The railway crosses streams, defiles, and ravines traversed by viaducts which are longer than 200 metres, in some cases. These complex works of industrial engineering were designed by the French engineers Alessandre and Delapierre, at the end ofthe 20th Century. Vado-Jaen Station is located at the altitude of kilometre 37. The following landmark is Alcaude Station (km. 48.4). A little way below, bicycle routes set off for the Southern Sierra, and wander through the nature reserve of Laguna Honda, at the beginning of their circuit. On the right hand side border, a highway leads to another nature reserve, The Lagoon of Chinche. The last few kilometres pass by the reservoir of Vadomojon in a parallel direction. The Jaen section of the Green Trail concludes on the iron bridge which stands over the River Guadajoz.
