JAEN Information: JAEN
NATURAL HERITAGE |
Natural Heritage
Jaen is a land of contrasts. Its orography defines it as a combination
of mountain ranges, hillocks and fertile plains which are spread around
the length and breadth of its territory. The north borders on Sierra
Morena and the southern frontier meets the mountain spurs of the Andalusian
Mountain Range. In the centre the wide depression of the Guadalquivir
unfolds.
The Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas are located to the west,
bordering on the provinces of Albacete and Granada. The province possesses
four nature parks. The largest of these is the Sierras of Cazorla,
Segura and Las Villas, the greatest protected area in Spain. Within
this park there is an impressively rich display of flora and fauna.
Its botany includes endemics which are unique on this planet. On its
craggy heights browse mountain goat, Red deer and Fallow deer.
Royal eagles, Griffon vultures and Bearded vultures flyover its skies.
The park of Sierra Magina houses one of the most complete collection
of Mediterranean plants on the Peninsular. The park of Sierra de Andujar
preserves vast hills of Holm oak and cork tree woods, alongside meadows
where fighting bulls graze. In the park of Despeñaperros ,
the last wolf packs feed, not far from the original geographical formations
which enclose the gorge, a natural mountain pass between the Castilian
Meseta and upper Andalusia.
