MONUMENTAL HERITAGE |
Jaen Monumental Heritage
Few Spanish provinces possess such a prolific and varied list of historical
monuments as Jaen. A rich heritage of all and every one of the cultures
that have passed through the province, extends throughout its length
and breadth. Jaen has more than one thousand, three hundred catalogued
archaeological sites. The Iberians, for example, manifested their
aesthetic taste in constructions such as the Sepulchral Chamber of
La Toya, in Peal de Becerro. Here, there are bridges and paved roads
dating from the Roman era, which, in their day, connected different
mining works via Sierra Morena and Castulo. The Roman mosaics preserved
in Brunel, which lies close to Quesada, are from those centuries.
The centuries dominated by Arab rule were prolific for architecture.
The province conserves fortresses as emblematic as the stronghold
in Baiios de la Encina, which is more than one thousand years old.
Likewise, the Arab Baths of Jaen represent one of the purest examples
of Andalusi art. The restoration work, supervised by the architect
Luis Berges, won the Europa Nostra prize in 1984.
The province houses ten municipalities which have been declared an
historical-artistic complex.
This applies to Aleahi la Real, Baeza, Baños de la Eneina,
Cazorla, Homos de Segura, Huelma, Jaen, Sabiote, Segura de la Sierra
and Ubeda. Moreover, Jaen has a census of more than five hundred historical
monuments categorized as being of Good Cultural Interest.
Ubeda and Baeza are the towns with most monuments in the northern
Andalusia. Within these towns the Renaissance era was represented
by a multiplicity of palaces, churches and convents. The aristocrats
of Ubeda in the 16th and 17th Centuries accentuated the civil and
administrative character of the town, whilst Baeza remained faithful
to religious buildings and to the academic nature of the town as represented
by its University. The architect Andres de Vandelvira is the most
important figure of this era. The Sacra Capilla de El Salvador ( Sacred
Chapel of El Salvador) and the Hospital of Santiago in Ubeda were
designed by him, and he is also responsible for the philosophic aesthetic
style displayed by Jaen Cathedral. In the middle of the 16th Century,
Juan Martinez Montaiies is born in Akala la Real. He is the most important
sculptor of this era, a contemporary of Velazquez, and most of his
best work remains in Seville.
In Jaen, the Baroque era is manifested by an openly religious character.
Neoclassicism also left its mark in the form of palaces, convents
and churches. The Sacrarium of the Cathedral in the capital is the
work of Ventura Rodriguez. At the beginning of the century, industrial
architecture was circumscribed by the mining zones of Linares, La
Carolina and El Centenillo. Madrid Station, in Linares for example,
is a remarkable neo-Mudejar building constructed in the peak years
of the lead industry. Finally, the architecture at the end of the
20th Century is exemplified in the headquarters of the Bank if Spain
in Jaen, designed by Rafael Moneo. |
