Culture throughout the year
There are dozens of cultural events which take place throughout the
year in the villages and towns of Jaen. Culture, society and sport
monopolize the calendar of towns such as Jaen, Linares, Ubeda or Andujar.
The capital opens its programming in April with the International
Piano Prize, which brings the virtuosos of this instrument to the
auditorium of the Professional Conservatory of Music. Two months later,
in June, the fiestas honouring the Virgen de la Capilla coincide with
the Lagarto Rock Competition. The finalists of the national groups
who participate in this competition, perform in the Alameda auditorium
on the final night. World folk is the next date on the cultural calendar.
Groups and bands from the five continents provide colour and rhythm
to the streets of the capital during a long weekend in July.
The Autumn Festival attracts the interest of the theatre and music
lovers. The Intenational Festival of Jazz is celebrated in the capital.
Its venues are: the University, Chubby Cheek Club and the Darymelia
Theatre. Moreover, the capital is the protagonist of the Jaen Literary
Prizes, one of the most important awards in the whole country.
In the months of February and March Linares welcomes the International
Chess Tournament, one of the world's most prestigious events for this
sport. At the end of August, and coinciding with the fiestas in honour
of San Agustin, the prestigious Tarantas Competition (Tarantas are
mining songs with a special flamenco style) is held Finally, the Andres
Segovia International Guitar Encounter is celebrated in the cultural
centres of this town in November. Andujar has a date every September
with the Autumn University courses, whilst Ubeda begins the International
Festival of Music and Dance in May and June. This is one of the most
important and prestigious events of the musical calendar in Andalusia.
A large number of the concerts are celebrated in the auditorium in
the Hospital de Santiago. This magnificent cultural centre also welcomes
the Biennial Antiques Fair every two years.
In August and September, the neighbouring locality of Baeza holds
the International University of Andalusia's summer courses. The Antonio
Machado headquarters has specialised in the last few years in subjects
such as agriculture and rural tourism. The Festival of Early Music
takes places in December, and is shared with Ubeda.
Other offers of notable interest are the International Blues Festival
and the International Festival of Theatre which are held in Cazorla
in September and November respectively. Alcala la Real has a date
every July with Etnosur, the best showcase for voices from other countries.
The ethnic character of this event gives rise to theatrical performances,
markets, lectures and round tables. On the other hand, Segura de la
Sierra celebrates the International Air Film Festival, in June, whilst
Torreperogil welcomes the Theatre Fair, one of the best events in
Andalusia to enjoy independent and revolutionary groups and plays.
