Branding irons and noble beasts
In the heart of the region of El Condado, halfway between the olive
groves and the sierra, a beautiful landscape of holm oak and cork
trees spreads out before us. This exceptional Mediterranean forest,
inhabited by man since time immemorial, is divided between country
houses and ranches where the fighting bulls are raised and where they
graze. Between Vilches and Sorihuela del Guadalimar, there are many
ranches which raise bulls and which constitute a landscape of great
interest to tourists.
The Route of the Fighting Bull finds one of its most attractive products
in the El Condado Train. At
weekends during the months of February to May and from October to
December, this train leaves from Atorcha Station in Madrid and travels
down to Vilches inviting visitors to get to know the environment and
the ambience which surrounds this mythical animal. The first of the
activities offered on this route consists of a visit to a ranch which
raises this valiant livestock. The ranch manager explains everything
concerning breeding and selection of the best fighting bulls. After
a country-style meal the visitors attend a trial in which a professional
bullfighter proceeds to try out the animals destined for the most
important festivals. At nightfall, the visitors rest in enchanting
rural hotels. The following day they participate in excursions which
take them to the villages in the area. In these localities they visit
enterprises linked to the production of olive oil, the breeding of
partridges and ostriches, as well as taxidermy and traditional confectioners
workshops.
Both these visits and those to other enterprises are also included
in the route entitled Discovering the Rural World, another of the
tourism itineraries offered in this area. Moreover, this route passes
by the seven monuments which have attained the category of Good Cultural
Interest. Churches, palaces and castles found in the localities of
Castellar, Navas de San Juan, Santisteban del Puerto, Sorihuela de
Guadalimar and Vilches.
