JAEN Information: DESPEÑAPERROS Information

Despeñaperros Nature Park Routes - Part 1

Despeñaperros is the natural mountain pass from the Meseta to Andalusia. Split into two halves by a river course and by the division of the Andalusian Motorway, the E-5, Despeñaperros encloses a rugged landscape in which bold peaks of capricious shapes soar to the skies. Within the mountain massif which constitutes Sierra Morena, Despeñaperros is covered with dense holm oak forests, cork trees and gall-oaks. The last of the wolf packs to survive in Sierra Morena feed amongst these escarpments. Despeñaperros displays natural wonders of remarkable singularity such as the Organs, a geological whim of nature. Valdeazores and the Salto del Fraile (Friar's Leap) are other settings of original beauty. A winding road ascends to Collado de los Jardines, inhabited since Prehistoric times. The road terminates in Aldeaquemada, the sister village of Santa Elena, considered to be the "Gateway of Andalusia".

CarMalaga.Com Tip: Jaen Fauna

The natural protected areas of the province of jaen are the abode of numerous species of animals. The fauna of Jaen, both for quantity and variety, is considered to be one of the most important in Spain and Europe. In Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, the presence of mammals such as the Red deer, Fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar and Spanish Ibex or mountain goat is outstanding. Royal eagles, Griffon vultures and other birds of prey flyover the skies of these green lungs. The Bearded Vulture a bird in danger of extinction, returns to dominate the skies of this natural region. The rivers of crystal clear water are inhabited by indigenous trout and numerous otter communities. Amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates bring a touch of colour to this natural space. In Despeñaperros and the Sierra of Andujar there are also valuable communities of lynxes and wolves. Sierra Magina possesses plant species, exclusive to this Park, which flourish amongst its highest peaks.
