The contemporary city of Jaen: Walks through the Capital - Part
2
Plaza San Francisco, back to back with the Cathedral, is a knot of
streets presided over by the Palace of the Provincial Delegation.
The old Franciscan monastery was constructed around a Renaissance
style symmetrical patio. Calle Bernabe Soriano, known in the neighbourhood
as the Carrera (the race), is bordered by modernist and historic buildings.
From the beginning of this street one can admire a beautiful view
along its entire length, with the Cathedral towers at its far end.
The church of San Ildefonso and the Cathedral are the most distinguished
in the capital. A handful of architectural styles ,were superimposed
upon their original Gothic form, passing through Mannerist, Baroque
and austere Neoclassicism.
The origin of the temple is bound to the original chapel of San Ildefonso
where the Descent of the Virgen (1430), recalls the time when Jaen
suffered poverty and sieges. Behind the presbytery lies the Baroque
oratory of the Virgin of the Chapel.
Not far from San Ildefonso is the convent of las Bernardas, the Puerta
del Angel (the gateway of the Angel), and Alameda Park, a place for
recreation and fun. From its vantage points, close to the auditorium,
can be seen a beautiful view of the Senda de los Huertas (the orchard
pathway), and the mountain range of Jabalcuz. The Plaza de la Constitucion
(Constitution Square) is presided over by a monument which honours
the art of pottery and is work of Paco Tito, an artist from Ubeda.
The two most important arterial roads of Jaen lead out from this square.
On one side, Calle Virgen de la Capilla, which in Puerta Barrera branches
into Avenues Madrid and Granada. On the other, Calle Roldan y Marin,
which terminates in the Paseo de la Estación.
In the centre of this parade there is a monument which is the work
of the sculptor Jacinto Higueras. The sculptural ensemble commemorates
the battles of Las Navas de Tolosa and Bailen, which occurred in 1212
and 1808, respectively. Victoria Park is divided into three green
spaces from which can be glimpsed the beautiful image of the hill
and Castle of Santa Catalina. The Provincial Museum of Jaen resembles
a Renaissance palace flanked by four haughty towers. Its interior
contains the most important collection of Iberian art in the whole
of Spain. Other rooms are dedicated to the Roman and Arab civilizations.
The upper floor is dedicated to fine arts. Its rooms contain an ample
pictorial collection of the last few centuries. |
