Las Navas de Tolosa and Bailen
The Historical Sites of Navas de Tolosa and Bailen are today, peaceful
locations full of interest for culture lovers. Both places constitute
stellar poles in an itinerary which has been named The Route of the
Battles. Las Navas de Tolosa is today a district of the municipality
of La Carolina. On its outskirts, in 1212, one of the most transcendental
battles of the Reconquest took place, which implied the beginning
of the end of the Arab hegemony on the mainland. From that moment
on, the frontiers of Al-Andalus became narrower. Today, the most interesting
places are found in Saint Elena and the small hamlet of Miranda del
Rey whose outlying areas took the brunt of the major part of the battle.
In Las Navas de Tolosa stands the parochial church, and within it
are displayed allegorical objects of this event. The most commemorative
monument of this battle can be found in La Carolina. The sculptures,
as a whole, are presided over by a statue of the pastor Martin Halaja,
who, according to the legend, showed the Christian troops the shortest
route to reach the enemy. The Battle Route of Bailen passes through
the places where General Castaños defeated the Gallic army,
led by General Dupont in 1808.
The historical sites are the garden of San Lazaro, the mountains of
Cerrajon and San Cristobal, the Zumacares and the bridge of El Rumblar,
amongst other places. Therefore, the monument which commemorates the
battle was erected in the city centre. Moreover, the boundary of Bailen
was the scene of another battle, that of Baecula, in which Romans
and Carthaginians fought each other in the year 208 before Christ.
On that occasion, the battle fields were the hills of Jaros and la
Navarra. |
