El Condado General information
Vilches is one of the gateways to the region of El Condado. Reclining
at the foot of a hill, this village is dominated by the hermitage
of the Virgin of Castile. A trail of gentle slopes, on whose borders
germinate wide fields of olive trees, leads to Arquillos and Navas
de San Juan. The administrative capital of the region is proudly represented
by Santisteban del Puerto. At the entrance to the village there is
a bronze statue of a dinosaur and beside it, a pavilion which houses
the footprints left behind by these prehistoric animals during the
Mesozoic era.
Within the village, Santisteban displays two churches of remarkable
interest. These are the temples of San Andres and Santa Maria. The
Jacinto Higueras Museum exhibits the work of this local sculptor born
in 1877. The town which has the most charismatic monuments of El Condado
is Castellar. Its Iberian past is demonstrated in the caves and archaeological
sites which surround the village. Amongst its artistic catalogue,
the Collegiate Church and the church of the Encarnacion, constructed
in the 16th Century and possessing a marked Renaissance character,
are worthy of mention. The ancestral home of the Dukes of Medinaceli
is now the Town Hall.
Chiclana de Segura is where El Condado reveals its most delicious
character. Perched on a high hill, the white hamlet has taken advantage
of the hollows and the shelter provided by the rocks to increase its
size. Its quiet square is dominated by the church of San Pedro Apostol.
Sorihuela de Guadalimar has a frontier character due to its location
halfway between the regions of El Condado and Sierra de Las Villas.
