Searching the South: Alcala La Real
Alcala la Real is conditioned by the personality and character which
the group of monuments of La Mota bring to bear on this town. Crowning
the city, a solid mass of walls encloses the original village where
the Arab castle and the abbey church of Santa Maria la Mayor, constructed
with architectural elements which evoke both Gothic and Renaissance
times. The archaeological museum of this town is located within the
original fortress. La Mota is today, a social and cultural centre
of the first order. During the summer nights, there is a series of
poetry readings and musical performances which this town has always
enjoyed. Below, at the feet of La Mota, is a well preserved hamlet
with such remarkable buildings as the Abacial Palace (Abbey Palace)
and the Town Hall. The church of la Consolacion, built in the Renaissance
style, houses the image of the patron saint of the town, la Virgen
de las Mercedes in one of its chapels. Other monuments of interest
are the pilar (public watering place) of the Alamos, dating from the
middle of the 16th Century, and the Neoclassical churches of San Anton
and Las Angustias.
An ample range of hamlets are located round about Alcala la Real,
which all maintain their local colour. In nuclei such as Mures, Bobadilla,
Ribera Baja or Santa Ana, the beauty of their local architecture does
not go unnoticed. Alcaudete, Frailes and Castillo de Locubin are some
of the other municipalities located in the Southern Sierra of Jaen,
just like Alcala. |
