HUELVA Information: DOÑANA,
a World Heritage nature reserve |
From Matalascañas to the mouth of the Guadalquivir stretch
50,720 hectares of marshland, pasture, beach and riverbank that come
together to form the largest nature reserve and what may be the highest
concentration of seabirds to be found in Europe. Doñana is
also home to several species of mammal, some of them in danger of
extinction.
Five elements make up the reserve. Flooded from autumn to mid June
with brackish saltwater, in winter the marsh land fills with geese,
flamingos and herons from the north of Europe that come to spend the
winter here until the end of February. Scrub dominates the pastures,
and lagoons form around which cork oak, myrtle, and (in higher areas)
juniper all grow. The dunes form a highly beautiful landscape; they
are capable of moving as much as five kilometres in a year, trapping
pine trees, which dry up and form "crosses". The vera is
the area between the marsh land and the fine sand, where deer and
wild boar can be found, as well as the Iberian lynx and Spanish imperial
eagle, two endangered species which in Doñana produce the highest
number of mates. Although there are some unguided routes, the interior
paths can only be used as part of a pre-booked visit. Doñana
is the European sanctuary of any environmentalist and the veneration
of anyone interested in Nature. |

place on their migratory routes between Europe and Africa, but it
is also a refuge for many species in real danger of extinction, the
lynx for example. 40.000 aquatic birds and over 150.000 anatine birds
usually spend the winter here, taking advantage of the mild climate.
The image of bird colonies -herons, spoonbills- perched in the large,
gnarled cork oaks, the noted aviaries, is world famous, but also a
true reflection of what Donana represents. |
