Proto-Iberian walls from the seventh century BC unearthed in the Albaicín
show the antiquity of lliberis, Granada's original name. The Romans
left abundant inscriptions and plenty of quality marble. The Council
of lliberis, held in the early fourteenth century, reveals development
of the Christian structure in Andalusia. Zawa ibn Ziri settled in
Granada in 1010, and filled his territory with powerful military fortresses.
In 1238 al-Ahmar founded the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, stretching
from Murcia to Gibraltar, and which despite the fact that its territory
was continually reduced, was the most desired by all the kingdoms
in the Iberian Peninsula. The city's conquest in 1492 by Ferdinand
and Isabella, the 'Catholic Kings', made Granada the symbol of the
new state.
In 1984 UNESCO recognised the Alhambra, the Generalife and the AIbaicin
as World Heritage Sites.
