Cordoba Information: WORLD
HERITAGE |

Towards the end of the third century BC, the Romans founded the patrician
colony of Corduba next to an indigenous settlement. For several centuries
it would be the capital of Baetica and the city with the greatest
urban perimeter of all the provinces in Hispania. The great moment
of splendour for Cordoba came with Abd ar-Rahman Ill, who proclaimed
himself caliph in 929.
This period of splendour, which had begun almost a century before,
continued through to the first decade of the eleventh century. Civil
wars were to destroy the whole economic, military and, to a much lesser
extent, artistic emporium. When Ferdinand III conquered Cordoba, in
1236, he found an almost deserted city. This decay continued until
the end of the fifteenth century, when the military pressure on Granada,
the last Muslim stronghold, made Cordoba the capital of this frontier.
Much of the sixteenth century was a period of human and economic growth,
as shown by the number of religious and civic constructions from that
time. In 1994 UNESCO declared the "Historical Centre of Cordoba"
a World Heritage site. |

CarMalaga.Com Tip: Juderia's
Route |
Our route returns to
the Mosque and its surroundings, an area whose monuments reffect the
city's multicultural character faithfully. The Jewish Synagogue, which
together with that in Toledo are the only two remaining in Spain,
is near to the Zoco de Artesania, the squares named La Plaza Tiberiades
and La Plaza Maimonides, the Old Hospital del Cardenal Salazar, the
Mudejar Chapel of San Bartolome, the Convent of San Pedro de Alcantara,
the Church of La Trinidad and the Casa de los Guzmanes.
Following the route through this area, we come to a series of beautiful
lanes, such as that of Las Flores, and squares like the Plaza de Seneca,
from which we can odmire the minaret on Plaza de San Juan. Nearby
are the Arab Baths of Santa Maria, from which it is possible to make
out interesting buildings such as the Casa del lndiano, the baroque
Convent Church of La Encarnacion, the Santa Clara Mosque, and the
Palace of Los Paez, which houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum. |
