Cordoba Information: THE ROUTE OF THE CALIPHS Information

The Route of the Caliphs runs between the two most impotant town of Hispano-Muslim history, including the frontier area of Jaen. Two great towns and two great centuries. Cordova's consequence was world-wide and Granada's was one of refinement and drama. These are the two extremes on either side of the inmense cultural, political, and social heritage of al-Andalus, a civilization with unique and un repeatable features. Between both, there is a land of legends, of garrisons, watchtowers and castle, of remarkable towns, people and customs. Two large geographical depressions are connected in the Route of the Caliphs - Gualdalquivir and Granada - linked by yhe valleys across the southern sierras. There are two mountain ranges, Sierra Morena in the provinces of Cordova and Sierra Nevada in that of Granada. During the reigns of the Omayyad caliphs, the territory that lies along this route was inlcluded in three provinces or coras: Cordova, Cabra and Ilbira.

All three were part of the splendour of the caliphate in Cordova, which was the most brilliant centre of learning in the western world at that time. Here was the scenery of the adventures and episodes sung in mediaeval Spanish romances.

CarMalaga.Com Tip: Very close at the Mosque
The Treasury. Much of the town's major art works in precious metals are to be found in the Cathedral Treasury. Particularly beautiful is a small reliquary, produced in silver and filigree dating from the end of the fifteenth century. Much more striking is the processional cross of Bishop Mardones, in gilded silver with engraved elements, pieces in gold and emeralds, though false jewel are also used in parts. It dates fro the seventeenth century, is manj nerist in style and has an architec tural organisation. In the same century, Cordoba tradition created a image of San Rafaek. One of the most elegant is by Damian de Casitro, a Cordoba silversmith from th eighteenth century, housed in the Treasury.
The monstrance by Enrique de Arfe is one of the most beautiful in Spain. It was first used in the Cor pus Christi procession of 1518. It's a work in gilded silver, in the shap of a tower.
