As a result of its excellent climate, Cordoba is the ideal place for celebrations. Although there are fiestas all year round, spring is undoubtedly the best time for outdoor events. Soon after the Carnival comes Easter, a week in which the city perfectly combines artistic splendour and religious solemnity. An illustration of this is the procession of the Cristo de los Remedios de Animas. ln April, Cordoba hosts the Ciudad de Cordoba blues festival. MAY CROSSES AND PILGRIMAGES The pilgrimages of Santo Domingo, whose origins date back to the 15th century, and Linares mark the beginning of the Spring Fiestas. In May, the squares and streets of quarters like that of San Basilio are decked out with flower crosses and a competition is held to find the most beautiful flower-covered patio in the city. Also around this time is the Feria in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Salud, a highly popular festive event which coincides with the main bullfighting season at the Plaza de los Califas. FESTIVALS Cordoba's calendar of festivities and cultural events include: Corpus Christi, a festivity during which the magnificent gothic Monstrance of Arfe is taken out for a procession; theVela of La Fuensanta, in September, the fiestas in honour of San Rafael, in October; a Guitar Festival; a National Flamenca Competition; and a Pop Rock Festival. |
