 Sierra Morena forms a natural boundary with the north of the city of Cordoba, beyond which lies the valley of the River Guadalquivir which runs across the middle of the province. Cordoba, a land with an important historic, cultural and monumental legacy, has excellent rail communications with Seville and Madrid thanks to the AVE (the Spanish high speed line). As a result of its strategic importance, Cordaba was chosen as an enclave for Roman troops. Thus, it was actually the unofficial centre of Hispania Ulterior and became the capital of the newly created province of Baetica after the civil war waged between Caesar and Pompey.The most remarkable figures of this period of prosperity included the Annaeus - an aristocratic family - the philosopher Seneca, and the poet Lucan. Diocletian moved the capital taHispalis (Seville), and under the auspices of Bishop Osio, the expansion of Christian faith began. Cordoba's heyday come with the Umayyad Dynasty, under whose rule the city became the nerve centre of the Caliphs' Al-Andalus, which broke away from Damascus and declared itself independent. Under rulels like Abd al-Rahman III and his son Al-Hakam II,Cordoba became the most prosperous and cultivated city in Europe and the biggest in terms of population. lts forme rMosque ,which has been declareda World Heritage Site ,is one of the most beautiful monuments in Spain. Throughout its long history, Cordoba has produced great, scholars and thinkers, such as Averroes and Maimonides, warriors, such as Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordova who earnedthe name of El Gran Capitan (The Great Captain) - poets like Gongora, and painters like Julio Romero de Torres. |
