Cordoba's museums contain collections of great value ond historic
importance.
The Archaealogical Museum, which is housed in the Palace of Los Pelaez,
exhibits works dating from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. Examples
include a Neolithic vase found at the Cave of Los Murcielagos de Zuheros,
exceptional Roman mosaics, a Paleo Christian sarcophagus, and objects
found in Medina Azahara.
The Old Hospital of La Caridad houses two museums: the Fine Arts Museum,
which includes paintings by Valdes Leal, and a museum dedicated to
the life and work of Julio Romero de Torres which bears the painter's
name. Also interesting are the Bullfighting Museum, which pays tribute
to grear matadors like "Guerrita", and "El Cordobes",
the Diocesan Museum of Fine Arts, and the History Museum.

Santa Marina Quarter in Cordoba |
| Constructed in the 13th
century, Santa Marina is the largest quorter in the city which dotes
from the late middle ages. Its typical taverns, which serve traditional
food, hove become improvised meeting places for bullfighting and flamenco
enthusiasts. Access to the quarter is by climbing the Cuesta de San
Cayetano hill thorugh the Puerta de Colodro, a gate which was the
original entrance of the La Ajerquia wall. Other places which are
well worth visiting include: the Convent Church of San Jose, the Church
of Santa Marina, the Convent of Santa lsabel de Los Angeles, the Convent
Church of San Agustin, the Palace of Viana , and the monument to the
Great Manolete. |
