Cordoba Information: ALCAZAR DE LOS REYES CRISTIANOS

The Alcazar was used by Roman governors as a fortress, as a customs house for the Empire's river trade, and it maintained its military character during the times of the Visigoths and Almohads. Most of what can be seen today dates from the time of Alfonso XI (13121350), who combined his Europeanist style, resorting to the purest Gothic forms of the time, with the Mudejar tradition, as can be seen in the Arab baths and the Mudejar Courtyard, with interconnecting water channels, in the Muslim tradition. Work began in 1328.

Four towers indicate the defensive nature of the building; the Leones tower dates back to the time of Alfonso XI, though the others are more recent. The Alcazar is the most harmonious example of military architecture in Cordoba. Lovers of Roman archaeology can admire an interesting collection of mosaics and a magnificent sarcophagus, all found in Cordoba. The sarcophagus was sculpted in Rome in the third century AD. A walk round the Alcazar gardens are a must in winter or on a summer night.

CarMalaga.Com Tip: Very close at the Mosque
The Treasury. Much of the town's major art works in precious metals are to be found in the Cathedral Treasury. Particularly beautiful is a small reliquary, produced in silver and filigree dating from the end of the fifteenth century. Much more striking is the processional cross of Bishop Mardones, in gilded silver with engraved elements, pieces in gold and emeralds, though false jewel are also used in parts. It dates fro the seventeenth century, is manj nerist in style and has an architec tural organisation. In the same century, Cordoba tradition created a image of San Rafaek. One of the most elegant is by Damian de Casitro, a Cordoba silversmith from th eighteenth century, housed in the Treasury.
The monstrance by Enrique de Arfe is one of the most beautiful in Spain. It was first used in the Cor pus Christi procession of 1518. It's a work in gilded silver, in the shap of a tower.
