Cadiz Information: THE WHITE TOWNS

This a beautiful route that takes in the so-called white towns and villages in the Sierras Subbeticas of Cadiz and Malaga. The houses are whitewashed as protection from the fierce Andalusian sun. The hilly countryside, beautiful landscapes, traditional architecture and delicious cuisine, all make for an unforgettable route.

ARCOS DE LA FRONTERA. Perched on a hill overlooking a valley of olive groves and vineyards, with land cut back from the River Guadalete, this monumental town, with remains of Arab walls from the eleventh century, a ducal castle and two excellent churches full of artistic treasures, San Pedro and Santa Maria, the latter of which has the air of a cathedral. The aristocratic homes, traditional Andalusian courtyards and countless charming spots make Arcos one of the most memorable towns in Andalusia.

GRAZALEMA, in the Endrinal hills, lends its name to the surrounding nature park, the area with most rainfall in Spain, with an annual average of over 2,200 litres. The town is protected by a huge crag. The forest, which stretches out along the foothills of Mount Albarracfn, gives way to the Grazalema nature park, a biosphere reserve. Its treasure is the forest of Spanish firs, a coniferous tree up to 30 metres high and with slightly bluish needles. The Spanish fir is a relic of the Tertiary age.

UBRIQUE. Apart from its famous morocco leather industry, Ubrique has the added attraction of its wild surrounding countryside. Close to the town is the archaeological site of the Roman Ocurri, an as yet unexplored city.

JIMENA DE LA FRONTERA, surrounded by land used by cattle breeders as pastures for their fighting bulls, has an interesting Arab castle, and some superb Gothic and Baroque churches, indicating the past strength of these frontier towns.
