Cadiz Information: CAMPO
DE GIBRALTAR |
The shoreline of Cadiz, after passing through fishing villages such
as Conil, Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes, continues into the small
but densely populated district named Campo de
Gibraltar, which is very near to Africa.

The tourist may be attracted by the water sports practised
here, particularly windsurfing from the long beaches of the area and
for which Tarifa, a charming town with a splendid castle and typical
urban design, is especially recommended.
Nearby are the Roman Ruins of Baelo Claudia in Bolonia. Golf is another
sporting alternative, practised particularly in San Roque. The district
contains several important towns, such as AIgeciras, with a population
of over 100,000, a busy port and typical quarters and corners, such
as the traditional Alta Square, with the Church ofNuestra Senora de
la Palma and the Chapel of Europe, or La Linea de la Concepcion, a
flat, white town near the Rock of Gibraltar.

Further inland we find old Castellar (new Castellar is a settlement
located on the plain) which is appealing because of its setting and
striking as a small Medieval village dominated by its Castle and today
inhabited by craftsmen and women and peace lovers who live as 20th
Century hermits.
San Roque is the historic capital of the district and is also worth
a visit, as are Los Barrios and Jimena de la Frontera, the latter
with its legendary Castle.
