Almeria Information: ALMERIA INLAND

The province of Almeria features widely varying landscapes and districts, from the sombre Alpujarras to the hardy Velez Lands, with churches the size of cathedrals, such as La Encarnacion Sierra de los Filabres, in Velez Rubio. and not forgetting the mountain areas, such as Los Filabres.

The Tabernas Desert presents landscapes to be seen nowhere else on the peninsular and also the chance to witness a spectacular reconstruction of the Wild West, since what was for years the Mecca of European cinema has quite rightly preserved the western villages constructed in minute detail at that time.

There are villages full of local colour at the foot of a well-preserved castle, such as Gergal or Velez Blanco, the latter an impressive citadel. In the Sierra of Los Filabres the white observatory of Calar Alto reminds us that this is the deanest atmosphere in Europe. and there is dear evidence of the increasing development of solar energy in this area.

The Almanzora basin, further north, is a prosperous district thanks to the marble quarries amongst other resources. It is a more densely populated area containing a wealth of beautiful villages. In Olula, we can feast our eyes on a parish church constructed entirely from marble, and very nearby is the bustling Macael, the marble capital. Villages, such as Tijola, appear suddenly, set on a fertile plain which contrasts with the dryness of the surrounding mountains, making tor striking landscapes.

Nearing Murcia, there are larger localities, such as Huercal Overa, surrounded by orchards and possessing remarkable buildings. Good craftsmanship may be found in many of these villages and there are numerous possibilities for those interested in caving and archaeology.
The carnival has regained unexpected force and character in many of these villages, which although generally small in size are very animated in the summertime and very hospitable at any time of year.
