Almeria Information: CABO DE GATA-NIJAR NATURE RESERVA

Near to the town of Almeria, belonging in part to its municipality, is located the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Reserve. This is a paradisiacal place, miraculously maintained in seclusion
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and impressively peaceful.

Clear waters ideal for scuba diving, deserted beaches, old water tanks and wheels, volcanic landscapes, mastic trees, wild olive trees, palmettos, moving dunes and species, such as the jujube tree, which are native to the area and to nearby Africa.

The Park, covering almost 30.000 Hectares, is the ideal place for rides by
jeep or bike as well as tor sailing or windsurting on the transparent waters of its coves. Sightings of as many as 169 species of birds and concentrations of up to 2,400 flamingos, for example, have been recorded in the park. The park indudes many different areas.

In San Miguel, a typical tishing village, we may try the typical soup of Almeria with mayonnaise and seafood, or visit the bird observatory of Las Salinas and the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse, surrounded by cliffs and a deep blue sea washing into the coves.

San Jose is another point of reference, near to the beaches of Monsul and Los Genoveses, from which the Spanish ships set sail for the battle of Lepanto. To the east is Rodalquilar, a mining village which is today abandoned but where, up until a few decades ago, precious minerals were mined. A visit to Nijar to the north is a must.

There is a beautiful Mudejar parish church and a large house of dear Moorish origin which is of particular interest. It is also holds great attraction for those who are interested in
local crafts, with the varied pottery and fabrics as unique as the jarapas.
