Almeria Information: ALMERIA,
COLOUR AND LIGHT |

Almeria is a city of light open to the Mediterranean, whose recent
growth has not taken anything away trom the local colour of its older
quarters nor trom that flavour of nearby Atrica which sets it apart
trom other Andalusian towns.
In these lands, which were the home to powerful civilisations during
prehistory, such as those of El Algar or Los Millares, the Arabs leit
their mark and even today, the reddish Alcazaba Fortress, one of the
largest of its kind on the peninsula, dominates the urban landscape.
In the centuries following its construction, begun at the end of the
tirst millennium, it is said that it could house an army of 20,000
men and their munitions.
Today we can still see the three walled enclosures with towers, such
as La Vela or El Homenaje. but wars and earthquakes have deprived
us of their interior palaces and mosques.
The other great monument of Almeda is its Cathedral. Its fortress-like
structure make's it impressive from the outside, but its interior
is Renaissancce, with a beautiful Plateresque chancel and large Baroque
altar pieces. It is in keeping with the modd of the great cathedrals
of the eastern provinces of Andalusia: Granada, Jaen and Malaga.
Almeria possesses a large number of smaller churches, many of which
are enchanting. The Church of Santo Domingo church houses the image
of the patron saint, the Virgen del Mar.
The Church of San Juan is worthy of attention, having been constructed
upon the ruins of the main Muslim mosque, of which part of the mihrab
and decorativc features are preserved. The Church of Santiago is rcmarkable
tor its high tower. The Convent of Las Concepcionistas has a Mudejar
church and two beautiful patios in the same style. The Convent of
Las Claras, the other great convent of the town, is also Mudejar,
although its facade is Plateresque.
The different quarters of Almeda are very heterogeneous, from La Chanca,
entwined around the Akazaba, traditional and full of local colour,
with facades of various colours which differentiate it from so many
other typical quarters in the rest of Andalusia, to the both maritime
and statdy Zapillo quarter, not forgetting the shopping areas of the
centre, with beautiful squares, such as Constitucion Square, the popular
Plaza Vieja, and the Paseo, the main boulevard and the centre of the
life of the town.
The port, with its mineral loading platform, an exemplary modd of
iron engineering, the La Pescaderia Quarter and the long Nicolás
Salmeron Walkway-Gardens, lined with palm trees, is another attractive
part of the town. The Archaeological Museum, an echo of the important
past of the town, is well worth a visit.
