Almeria Information: THE COAST OF ALMERIA

Unrecognisable today to anyone who visited it thirty years ago, the coast of Almeria, particularly the southern part, is a varied mixture of intensive farming and tourism and leisure. Localities, such as El Ejido, which have grown up overvrecent years and are a focus oi great economic dynamism coexist alongside the old towns boasting beautiful architecture, such as Berja, slightly inland.

There is also the harbour of Adra. Moving inland from the coastline is the Alpujarra of Almeria: an
area full of little white villages in a privileged natural setting.

From Ohanes, famous for its table grapes, to Laujar, with its genuinely Arab architecture and urban design, not forgetting Canjayar and numerous other villages, where a tine Mudejar parish church, a white main square and striking views of the mountain landscapes are always to be tound.

These are cool refreshing villages, perfect for a new days relaxation during the summer months.
The coast is highly inviting and offers sports lovers a wide variety of alternatives, irom golf and tennis to sailing. There are numerous marinas and schools sailing, etc. and long, sandy beaches. From Aguadulce to Adra there is one resort after another, many of them as deservedly acclaimed as Roquetas de Mar, so popular with central European tourists and possessing numerous hotels of bold architectural design.

The eastern part oi the coast, where Vera. there is much less farming and which is generally less busy, offers villages as unique and well-preserved as Mojacar alongside places of unspoilt beauty.

There are, however, also many locations such as Carboneras or Vera. with its well-known nudist beach, which are becoming more popular owing to the cleanness of
their waters, the quality of the sand and the beauty of their striking landscapes. Inland, a visit to the archaeological site of El Algar in the municipality of Antas. or to such beautiful town as Sorbas is highly recommended.

The fried fish should not be missed and may be tried at any point along the coast, but is particularly recommended in tishing villages such as Garrucha.
