Almeria Information: EL
CABO DE GATA AND ITS BEACHES |

A strip of coastline 30 kilometres long makes up the Cabo de Gata-Nijar
nature park, an area made up of the last foothills of the Sierra de
Gata, dunes, cliffs, coves, long beaches, salt flats, scrub and lagoons.
The Sierra del Cabo de Gata, the only volcanic formation in the Iberian
Peninsula, is one of low altitude, and its highest peak does not reach
500 metres. It stretches down to the sea, forming small coves. The
semi-desert nature of some of the coastal areas and the rocky nature
of the sea bed make for an exceptionally clear sea. Beyond San Miguel
de Cabo de Gata are the salt flats now known as Almadraba de Monteleva.
Standing out from the long flat scenery is the high tower, eroded
by iodine and salt. The long beach has remarkably transparent water.
There is an observation point at the nearby lagoon to follow the movement
of the area's birds, particulary the colonies of flamingos, with their
flights of pink plumage rising over the water. Almost two hundred
catalogued bird species can be found here. An interesting challenge
is to take the road up through the rocky formations as far as the
lighthouse to enjoy thu superb view of Monsul beach, with abundant
sand dunes, the Media Luna inlet and, further away, Los Genoveses
beach, with its historical connections and extra fine sand that stretches
off gently into the sea, protected by an arch of hummocks that help
to calm the sea.
The nearby town of SAN JOSE repeats this style of beach, in the shape
of an arch and with fine sands. Inland, the area of TABERNAS constitutes
the only desert in Europe.
