GALICIA Information

Galicia photo

GALICIA is always surprising, since this part of the Northwest of Spain is a sharp contrast to the image typically held of the Spanish landscape abroad. Galicia belongs to the green Europe of the Atlantic, with the peculiarity that the Rias Bajas is the sunniest part of the northern Spanish coasts. Plains are scarce in this hilly landscape, but wild countryside and mountains form appealing spots and natural parks. Some mountains soar as high as two thousand metres in the massifs of Ancares, Courel, Manzaneda and Pena Trevinca. The capital city is Santiago de Compostela. The main urban centres are the capitals of the four provinces, A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra, and also the cities of Vigo and Ferrol. The population, quite scattered, is almost three million inhabitants, with a density close to 100 inhabitants per square kilometre, very much higher than the Spanish average. The development of Galician society, its activities and urban landscape have also undergone notable transformation in the last few decades. From the stereotype of a rural, old-fashioned Galicia, it has evolved to become a dynamic, developed region. Huge industries have appeared, among them shipbuilding in Ferrol and car assembly plants and again shipbuilding in Vigo. Galicia is a leading region in agriculture. The modernization of farming methods is clear in the Semana Verde (Green Week) of Silleda, where the latest technological advances in this field are shown. Galicia is also advanced in fish-farming, thanks to modern sea-farms for raising oysters, shellfish and fish. Other activities include fashion, whose designers rank among the best in Europe; jewellery with its craft centre in Bergondo; and fur, in which die Galician mink is notable.
