CORDOBA ENTERTEINMENTS - Caving and Pot Holing
Orientation Centre in Sierra de Grazalema - Montejaque |
|
|
The Caving and Pot-Holing Orientation and Information Centre/Museum
of Montejaque, is now a fully realised project based upon
the signing of a testament of co-operation in 1997 between
the Town Council of Montejaque and the Andalucian Federation
of Caving.
In the Museum, through various informative panel displays
and exhibition cases we are introduced to the native rock
types, examples of the pre-historic local history with pottery
remains and stone tool work and audiovisual demonstrations
of the karstic geological formations that surround Montejaque.
We can also see a display of the formation of the caves
and pot-holes and maps of the many systems. Concepts include:
the relationship of humankind with the caves; caving as
a sport and a science; the exploration of a given zone with
up-todate information on the latest caving techniques; special
ways of descending canyons and cave-diving and boating.
Ecologically concerned about pollution materials we learn
about the fundamental importance of the protection and the
conservation of the caves, subterranean photography, the
human occupation of the fluvial valley of the Guadiaro,
bio-caving,the essential protection of the bat population
etc. The Centre offers comprehensive information and orientation
to both the enthusiast, professional and the public alike.
The most important systems around the municipality are those
of the Sima del Pozuelo, the hydrological formation of the
Hundidero/Gato complex, La Cueva de la Pileta (Cave of the
Blessed Waters) that is a gallery for artists of 25,000
b.c, and the deepest pot-holes in Andalucia - Sima Gesm
and the Sima del Aire.
The Centre and Museum is open to everyone who visits. Furthermore
it has a fully equiped conference room for the use of specialists
and students.

In the beautiful Serrania de Ronda, the Centre enjoys a privileged
location, surrounded as it is by the mountain ranges of Libar,
Montelate, Juan Diego amongst others, and the sculpted peaks
of the volcanic remnants of such as Ventana, Hacho, Tavizna
and Mures. Within the Natural Park of the «Sierra de
Grazalema», Montejaque is part of the «Subbetico
Interno» and its surroundings of limestone karst forms
a series of climable heights and descendable depths into potholes
like Pozuelo, Libar, Zurranque, Burfo etc., each very individually
unique and geologically special to the zone.
The Centre is an ideal space to establish conference cycles
with a specialised audience or interested public. Projected
are detailed courses on modern caving; all ecological aspects
including information on the conservation of the karst formations
in the district; the environment; seminars with professionals;
school visits; high school and ' university students and all
other interested parties. Montejaque has a comprehensive and
thriving tourist infrastructure, with both traditional and
fully renovated village houses to rent and indeed can offer
luxury accomadation.
The Caving and Pot-Holing Orientation and Information Centre/Museum
has been brought into being thanks to the dedicated team
work of everyone involved. Montejaque Town Council, the
Caving Federation of Andalucia and the economic assistance
of the institutions of the Junta de Andalucia.
Illustrated bya series of panels that inform us of the ethnology,
flora and fauna of the immediate district this exhibition
shows the vast bio-diversity and demonstrates the enormous
importance of maintaining today for future generations this
and indeed all natural spaces included in the network of the
Protected Natural Spaces of Andalucia.
