CANARY ISLES Information - Spain Tourism
|
|
The seven main islands of the Canaries (together with the well as
the smaller isles) have always been a place of myth and of history,
and an irresistible attraction for geographers. These islands, with
their mild climate and eternal spring weather, are above all areas
of surprising beauty, with very large differences between them.
Their volcanic nature and the benign influence of the trade winds
provide them with a surprising forest vegetation that disappeared
elsewhere after the Tertiary period, and species such as the dragon-tree,
a long-lived tree with everyday medicinal properties and shrouded
in legends of blood and heroes.
Even the public authorities have recognised the beauty of the islands,
granting protection to three thousand square kilometres of the seven
thousand that make up the archipelago. However similar the climate
and volcanic origin of the islands, each one is different, from
the abundance of beaches on Fuerteventura to the lunar landscape
of Lanzarote or the legendary scenery of La Palma ("la isla
bonita"), without forgetting the titanic mass of el Teide.
The largest island, Tenerife, is seven times the size of the smallest,
el Hierro. Located on the Tropic of Cancer, next to the African
continent, the easternmost isle, Fuerteventura, is only around a
hundred kilometres from the Moroccan coast and the Sahara desert.
Lovers of pottery, traditional popular architecture, ancestral customs
and unique, forgotten cultures, together with followers of astronomy,
find a great deal to enjoy in the Canary Isles.
