THE BILBAO GUGGENHEIM COLLECTIONS

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum owns one of the world's foremost collections of avant-garde art, including a broad selection of works by Vasily Kandinsky and numerous masterpieces by Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, and many other fundamental Modern and contemporary artists. Throughout the 20th century. the acquisitions program of the New York museum has maintained its constant commitment to the art of our time. Its initial nucleus focused on what Hilla Rebay called. non-objective art: particularly the works of Vasily Kandinsky. In addition to these, the early acquisitions also included signature paintings by Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger, Amedeo Modigliani, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, among others.

Later, the collection was augmented with the works of other artists important to the course of 20th-century art: Karl Nierendorf's holdings brought more than 100 paintings by Paul Klee and numerous works of German Expressionism and Surrealism; the estate of Katherine S. Dreier contributed works by Constantin Brancusi, Juan Gris, Piet Mondrian, and Kurt Schwitters; the collection of Justin K. and Hilde Thannhauser added masterpieces of the French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements. including works by Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne ,Edgar Degas ,Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec; Giuseppe Panza di Biumo's collection brought in a large number of American Minimalist and Conceptualist works; and the impressive donation of 200 of Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs marked the beginning of a growing collection of contemporary photography.

Thanks to the acquisition of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice a group of works that reflects Peggy's interest in American Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism-the collection now includes over 300 pieces by artists whose works had been absent from the New York museum. Some highlights of her collection include excellent examples of Surrealism by Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, and Yves Tanguy; Dada works by Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Kurt Schwitters; and works by others such as Giorgio de Chirico, Francis Picabia, and Rufino Tamayo. Taken together, these holdings form one of the most interesting collections of Modern and contemporary art in the world today. Thus, both artistically and historically, the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation provide a solid platform on which to base the criteria and chronology of the growing Guggenheim Museum Bilbao's Own Collection.
