BACKGROUND Bilbao Guggenheim Museum |
The history of the foundation dates back to the end of the 1920s. when Solomon R. Guggenheim met the person who would become his art advisor. Baroness Hilla Rebay. InAuenced by Rebay's enthusiasm for abstract painting. Guggenheim began to collect "non-objective" art-Rebay's translation of the German term gegenstandslos. which literally means art that is "objectless" or "without objects:' By 1939. Guggenheim felt ready to show his expanding collection to the public. so he rented a car showroom on Manhattan's East 54th Street and turned it into what he called the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. The new museum Aourished. and within a few years. it required more space to house the collection and the activities of the foundation. In 1943. therefore. Guggenheim commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a new building. In 1952. following Guggenheim's death. the museum's name was changed to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in honor of its founder. By the time of the opening of the new building on Fifth Avenue in 1959-a landmark in the history of modern architecture-the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was already 20 years old and housed a collection that had been started 30 years earlier. In 1976, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection passed into the hands of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. That year, Peggy Guggenheim bequeathed her own private collection. as well as the 18th-century building where it was housed-the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal in Venice-to the institution founded by her uncle Solomon. In 1992, the foundation opened its second New York museum. the Guggenheim Museum SoHo designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened five years later in October 1997 thanks to the collaboration between the Basque authorities and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. In November of that same year, the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin opened on the ground floor of the Berlin branch of Deutsche Bank. |
