BALEARIC ISLES Information |

In the Mediterranean, insularity is more an element of communication
than it is of isolation. All the historical trends and fashions
of any significance on the shores of the Mediterranean have left
their mark on these islands, which have always appealed to those
with an urge to dominate, from the Carthaginians to the English,
and including the Turkish corsairs.
The archipelago is made up of three main islands, Majorca, Minorca
and Ibiza, two smaller islands, Formentera and Cabrera, and over
two hundred rocky isles, islets and dots of land in the sea. The
island nearest the Peninsula is Ibiza, and the furthest, Minorca.
Neither to the north nor the south do their parallels extend beyond
the region of Valencia. Despite the different personality of each
island, there has always been a difference between Ibiza and Formentera
(known as the Pitiusas) and the other isles. The former have a drier,
hotter climate and a physiognomy all their own made up of whitewashed
houses. Despite strong links to the eastern lands of the Iberian
Peninsula, for almost seventy years (1276-1343) Majorca formed an
independent kingdom, made up of Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera, together
with the counties of Roussillon and Cerdagne. The monarch's official
residence was in the royal palace of Perpignan, although Majorca
is full of regal palaces. Minorca did not belong to this kingdom.
Tourism, the great Spanish industry of modern times, has invaded
the islands, but happily they retain their personality and their
magic.
