Routes of Andalusian Flamencos - ROUTE OF THE CREATION: TRACES OF THE CHACON

Whereas it is uncertain that flamenco singing was born in Malaga or Granada's feuds from time immemorial, what it is irrefutable is that Jerez-born Antonio Chacon Garcia was the one who gave the area's jondos a definite style. He soon left his hometown around 1884, and therefore granaina, as we know it today, cannot be dated before then. He also created his particular malagueña and cartagenera styles.

RONDA
The origin of polo and cana styles is in this town, where singer Tobalo was born. Antonio el Bailarin revolutionized dance creating martinetes dancing in his time by the well-known Tajo gorge.

MALAGA
On the second half of the 19" century, Malaga was a prosperous city where many cafes cantantes were set up. It is said that at El Sin Techo cafe, Tomas el Nitri was awarded with the first popular flamenco Llave de Oro del Cante award. A walk around the neighbourhood of El Palo will explain the keys for the wellknow marengos and jabegote flamenco singings.

VELEZ MALAGA
In the Axarquia, whose nerve flamenco singing centre is Velez-Malaga, you must inexcusably hear verdiales groups, that perform a folkloric singing which influenced local flamenco-inspired fandangos.

GRANADA
In Granada Chacon transformed most of the local flamenco singing styles. He was part of the jury of the 1922 Contest, an event promoted by intellectuals such as Federico Garcia Lorca, who created words and expressions like duende, sonidos negros and cultura en la sangre, to name but a few. His hometown, Fuentevaqueros, can also be visited.

MONTEFRIO, ALGARINEJO AND IZNAJAR
Towns such as Iznajar, Algarinejo, and Montefriso are also part of this route since the labor singing and different varieties of por trilleras singings varieties are typical there.
