ANDALUCIA Information |
Separated from Africa by the thirteen kilometres of the Straits
of Gibraltar, Andalusia is at the western end of the Mediterranean
basin, and also occupies a considerable stretch of the Atlantic
coastline. It is, moreover, the southern most part of Europe. This
extreme position of closing off a sea, opening up an ocean and limiting
a continent is perhaps the primary explanation of the region's history.
Since time immemorial people have succumbed to the urge to visit
or possess this extreme and uneven land. So many centuries of visit
or conquest have used up those resources which Nature is unable
to replace, such as forests and minerals. Visitors or invaders have
also left many things which Andalusians did not take long in making
their own, some of these as important as the Latin and Castilian
languages. One example would be to mention the litany of universal
Andalusian poets.
In the 87,268 square kilometres that make up Andalusia, each district
is distinct from the previous area, and from the region that follows.
Distinct in climate, altitude, countryside, almost desert lands
and valleys of incredible fecundity, rainfall, variety of cultures
and human types.
Dividing Andalusia into two, East and West, the Andalusia of snow
and the Andalusia of the Guadalquivir Valley, is little more than
a didactic simplification.
